PIFD Library’s vision is to be the best library with respect of resources and services in the field of design education. To achieve it, the library strengthens its resources and services according to needs of its users.

Pakistan School of Fashion Design (PSFD) was established in 1994 as a project of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). With the blessing of Allah Almighty in 2008, PSFD was renamed as Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD), while in 2011 it succeeded to obtain Charter from Federal Government as a Public Sector Academic Institution. PIFD is a HEC recognized degree awarding institute which is functioning efficiently to strengthen the Pakistani industries by providing them qualified, hardworking, technical and enthusiastic professionals in seven disciplines of design which are Fashion Design, Textile Design, Fashion Marketing and Merchandising, Jewellery Design and Gemological Sciences, Furniture Design & Manufacture, Leather Accessories & Footwear and Ceramic Design.

PIFD is the first ever institute which is offering and has specialization in design education over the country. PIFD is focusing on producing design professionals who are deeply collaborative, ethically grounded, emphatically connected and technologically empowered. PIFD has a very clear vision of being in line with the cultural, social and religious values of our country while imparting quality education to its students.

To meet the objectives of the Institute, PIFD Library is imparting its role in the form of providing related reading materials to its users. The library has come into being right after the establishment of PSFD. The journey of PIFD Library consists of more than two decades. Currently PIFD Library has a rich collection of books, journals/ magazines, E-Books, E-Journals/ Magazines, Audio/ Video material and online databases. The library is continuously struggling to cope with the standards by ensuring quality of resources rather than quantity. The library conducts training sessions, workshops and literacy programmes as well as annual book fair for the dissemination of knowledge. Special lectures on different topics related to research are also being offered by the library for its users.

  • Complete silence should be maintained in the Library.
  • Eating, drinking, smoking and gossiping are prohibited in the Library.
  • Personal books, magazines, bags and big file folders are not allowed to bring in the library.
  • Library is only for the study purposes.
  • Activities like meetings, discussions and other extra-curricular activities are not allowed in the library.
  • Library staff has the right to expel or impose fine on violation of library rules.
  • Misuse of library property / belongings; such as walls, furniture, books, and magazines is strictly prohibited. On violation, fine will be imposed.
  • The librarian is authorized to withdraw library facilities from any user who is found misusing the library material or facilities.
  • The Registrar will be intimated about the decision.
  • All financial transactions will be made through accounts department and borrower will submit a copy of accounts receipt to the library after submission of dues.
  • The Library Rules may be revised with the permission of Registrar through Library Committee whenever needed.
  • The final recommendations/working of the Library Committee will be presented to Academic Council for the approval.
  • Casual visitors may obtain the special written permission of the Registrar to use the Library for the purpose of reading and reference only.
  • The library management is not responsible for the loss of cash, Jewelry or any other valuables. 
    All valuable items/ belongings must be kept in personal custody.
  • Reference books, textbooks, magazines/ Journals, CDs, Audio-video cassettes and newspapers should be used only within the library for sake of the reference.
  • Reference material may be issued for photocopy only for one hour.
  • The reference material may only be issued to the faculty members for teaching purposes and such resources are required to be returned the same day.
  • A fine of twenty rupees per day on general items and hundred rupees per day on reference items will be charged, provided the resources are not returned within due time.
  • Permanent Faculty members can borrow three books for thirty (30) days.
  • The issued books may be renewed for the term of another thirty days provided, they are not in demand by any other faculty member. 
  • Books are to be brought in the library for renewal.
  • (Official holidays will not be included in due time) Visiting Faculty members can borrow two books for fifteen (15) days provided.
  • The issued books may be renewed for the term of another fifteen (15) days provided, they are not in demand by any other faculty member.
  • Books are to be brought in the library for renewal.
  • Students and the staff members have the right to borrow two books for fifteen (15) days .
  • The issued items may be renewed for the term of another seven (7) days, if they are not in demand.
  • Students can borrow more than two (2) books (general books) for an hour for photocopy purposes.
  • Students will be fined twenty (20) rupees per book and per hour if he/she fails to return the book timely.
  • Users are not allowed to take any library material without prior permission of the library management.
  • It is mandatory to bring college ID card in order to borrow resources from the library.
  • The users are required to come in person for the issuance of library resources and are not allowed to get them on anybody else’s ID card.
  • The librarian should be informed at once in case, the library card is misplaced or lost.
  • The Librarian may, at his discretion, reduce or remit the fine incurred by a borrower.

Print Resources:

PIFD Library emphasizes on quality of information material rather then quantity. The library possesses reasonable print resources in form of Reference Books, General Books, Magazines/ Journals, Theses/ Projects, Urdu and English Literature.

Qualified, experienced library professionals are always willing to support the users with the wide range of information resources. The Reference Desk throughout the day helps users in locating information and their required material by using the print and electronic resources. The Reference Desk provides Guidelines, like how to use library collections and respond in-person if needed. User’s Queries are also handled through telephone and e-mails. In case of unavailability of required information resource(s) users are referred to other libraries, offices or individuals for getting their needed information/material.

All registered students, faculty members and staff are eligible to borrow books from the library for a specific time period. Institute’s ID card is mandatory to avail this service.

PIFD library offers distant-material by providing reading material especially journal articles, e-books and links to its users through its Document Delivery Service.

PIFD Library has established a Laptop Lab for its users especially engaged in research work. Reasonable desktop computers are separately available in the library for the general users of the library.

Library, resources, services and facilities are informed to the users through Information Literacy Programmes. In these programmes different orientations which includes How to use Library, Searching Techniques, Trainings and Information Sharing are arranged for the users to make them more familiar with the strengths and importance of the library.

vResearch Support services like Related Article Provision, Plagiarism Checking, Research Contents, Citation Management, Methodology and HEC recognized journals etc. are also offered to the researchers to support them in their research work.
