Today research is essential for better teaching, learning and practice in the field of Arts education as it carries great potential for social impact and data-informed educational policy development in the Arts and Culture. The mphill. in Art and Design Education at PIFD initiates a new aspect of the field of Art and Design in Pakistan by offering a rigorous, but manageable programme of study by research. It offers a research degree which addresses the learning requirements of both Art and Design professionals who are also interested in the field of Education. Offered in the evenings, this programme is geared towards working professionals living in the city of Lahore and adjoining areas. This includes experienced teachers of Art, Design and related subjects, as well as training and educational professionals from the Creative Industries who wish to pursue teaching and/or research in the field. The programme of study is conducted over two years in Spring and Fall and culminates with an extensive Thesis by research, with an option for international placement/field practicum relevant to the students’ research in one of PIFD’s global partner institutions, or in the local community. The vision of the programme emphasizes the integration of educational theory with studio practice and research, as well as industrial practice, where relevant. The programme coursework is designed to develop independent thinking, interdisciplinary practice, and scholarly research and writing skills. It includes a variety of theoretical courses in research, foundations of Art/Design Education, practical courses in Studio Art/Design, field research, and a practicum of flexible courses which can be customized to include practices such as international placements or residencies, exhibitions, curriculum development, arts advocacy and policy development, curatorial and community projects.
The Fall semester is devoted to exposing students to the fundamentals of visual understanding in fine art and design history while focusing on enhancing written expression and introducing them to the strategies of analysis and customizing design processes. The practical element of the Foundation in Art and Design involves experimentation in a range of creative practices, including Fashion, Graphics, Materials and Models and Digital Communication.
