Opening: May 14, 10:30 am
Alhamra Art Gallery
This exhibition showcases the studio work of postgraduate students of Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design, Lahore. These students, who are also working professionals and art/design educators are from the first semester of a two-year research degree program in art and design education. The course in which this work was developed is called Thinking Through Materials, and it offers practicing teachers and professionals in art and design fields the opportunity to learn, unlearn and re-learn about their ways of knowing and working with materials and material play from the perspectives of both maker and educator.
The body of work exhibited focuses on making the learning process of students visible through showing their research and reflective processes with material exploration, and as such aims to challenge preconceived notions of the complete/finished artwork. In the first layer of the course students have explored the properties, structures, materiality and expressive qualities of various materials. Through material exploration they have extended their personal visual repertoires using critical inquiry and self-reflection on their own prior understandings and assumptions about materials. The second and equally important layer of this work is that these students have learned about the possibilities of taking processes of material exploration and play back into their own classrooms.
The Exhibition continues till Friday, May 17, 2019.
